Minimum Qualifications

Diploma or Certificate of Sport Physiotherapy

  • Must hold a current license with Saskatchewan College of Physical Therapy (SCPT)
  • Must be a member in good standing of Sport Physiotherapy Canada (SPC) and Sport Physiotherapy Saskatchewan (SPS)
  • Should have experience working with high performance athletes
  • Must have valid liability insurance

OR

Certified Athletic Therapist through CATA

  • Must be a member in good standing of the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association (CATA) and Saskatchewan Athletic Therapy Association (SATA)
  • Must be a certified member of the CATA
  • Should have experience working with high performance athletes
  • Must have valid liability insurance

NOTE: Therapists can be any of the following practicing professionals.

  • Athletic Therapist – A Certified Athletic Therapist with a Scope of Practice including the assessment, prevention, immediate care, and reconditioning of musculoskeletal injuries.
  • Diploma Sport Physio – A licensed Physical Therapist that can assist in the development of conditioning and flexibility programs, acute injury care, and complete rehabilitation of the athlete back to competitive level. Expert at taping and strong manual therapy skills.
  • Certificate Sport Physio – A licensed Physical Therapist trained in care of critically injured athlete, taping skills, knowledge of equipment, field care and sideline care of athletes, massage and some manual therapy skills.
  • Level 1 Physio – A licensed Physical Therapist who has been trained as an athletic first aider.

Note: Level 1 Physiotherapists can only provide the following services: Medical Coverage at Events and Initial Injury Assessments.

POLICY REGARDING – INITIAL INJURY ASSESSMENTS

The SMSCS may cover the cost of an initial injury assessment for Saskatchewan High Performance Athletes with any of the certified athletic therapists, diploma sport physio’s, and certificate sport physio’s. Contact the SMSCS at (s.jule@sasktel.net or 306-780-9446 ) prior to the appointment to discuss payment/coverage options. Any additional treatments will be at the cost of the athlete paid directly to the clinic/therapist.

The SMSCS will not cover the cost of initial assessments with therapists with only a level 1 sport physio designation.
